This past Sunday, VLS students and community members joined Environmental Law Society (ELS) and White River Partnership (WRP) to clean up the White River between the Fox Stand Bridge and Sharon. The group hauled more waste than ever, mainly due to the amount of people that attended.
With over 50 students and community members joining the ELS and WRP, it was by far the most successful River Clean up ELS has had in recent memory. One of the primary organizers behind this event, Lewis Grove, had this to lend: “As community members, we all have a stake in the cleanliness of the river. Folks went to the event in order to help maintain or improve the river’s beauty and safety for both current and future users.”
ELS is continuing to look to local organizations and communities for opportunities to get the student body of VLS more engaged in the area. Claire Valentine-Fossum, co-chair of ELS, let us know that “the main goal of ELS this year is to get students to look beyond the school for ways to make the state a better place for everyone.”
The members of the group are also excited to be getting more involved in local issues. Frank Erickson, a 2L at VLS was more than excited to help out with the river clean up for his second year in a row. “I came to VLS because of the opportunities to actively participate in environmental stewardship within the community from the first week I stepped foot on campus. ELS has and will continue to connect students with the local environment.”
The coming year looks to be a very active year for ELS, and they are all ears when it comes to ideas from the community for projects that can make a real impact in improving lives, and the environment.
