Members of the Board of the Hoosic River Watershed Association teamed up with Pownal, Vermont residents and members from Pownal Proud to clean up stretches of the Hoosic River in Pownal. In addition to finding tires, trash, bottles and a Have-a-Heart trap (empty), one person found a used old metal fire extinguisher. A car bumper (license plate attached) was also located and marked for a future removal. High flowing waters and thick foliage limited overall progress but the group of steadfast volunteers slogged along the river banks. We were pleased to learn that stretches of a feeding tributary picked for clean up was in good condition due to the efforts of abutting landowners.
Thanks to the Selectboard in Pownal for permission to use the local transfer station for recycling and dumping of debris. One volunteer offered to bring the Have-a-Heart Trap to a agency that tries to locate feral cats. Recyclable cans and bottles will be redeemed to help local veteran's agencies.
